The Ocarina: Music for the Trail

Reviews - Misc. Gear

Jeff’s Ocarina Epiphany

It was about five years ago that I started looking for a compact, rugged, musical instrument to play outdoors when camping. You can only carve so many spoons around the fire before you look for other interesting things to do. Ever since I watched Survivorman with Les Stroud I was always intrigued that he carried a harmonica into the woods a great many times. I heard that the harmonica was fun and Les looked like he enjoyed using his. Perhaps it was worth investigating,

Flowfold Wallet Review

Reviews - Misc. Gear

It never fails, just when I think I have all my outdoor gear needs covered Mother Nature comes along and proves me wrong. My leather wallet was soaked. It was the last day of my oldest son’s Webelo Scout Campout and it had been raining hard since two in the morning. Adding to the fun, the other Scout leader had forgotten to wake me when the gear trailer came by our campsite.

Beretta NEOS Review

Reviews - Misc. Gear

With all the choices available my thought of finding a suitable woods or camp gun became a daunting task.  I wasn't looking for ultimate stopping power or tactical flash. My criteria was pretty simple; versatile, inexpensive fun, and reasonable weight.  Wondering through the SHOT 2012 show I found what I was looking for. The Beretta Neos U22 pistol!

Cold Steel Boomerang

Reviews - Misc. Gear

Our modern world tends to put emphasis on things shiny, new and complicated. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but sometimes simple has its place. Perhaps the best intersection of ideas is when you take simple and apply some modern know how to it and you come up with a mix of the two. That’s the case with Cold Steel Boomerang.

Shoot Tech Systems Raptor Advance

Reviews - Misc. Gear

The ShootTech Systems Raptor Advance is an interesting concept in archery: it is a tool designed to function both as a compound bow (for hunting large game) and as an advanced sort of sling shot (for hunting small game). It achieves this by including a dual string, on which is mounted both a nock point for traditional arrows, and a magnetic “nock” that holds and fires .38 caliber steel ball bearings.

Manduka Pro- Black Magic Yoga Mat

Reviews - Misc. Gear

Manduka’s Pro-Black Magic yoga mat is firm, supportive and even when your dripping in sweat, provides traction, supporting your transitions and poses.
It is a bit cumbersome carrying the mat to the yoga studio or gym, but think of it as an additional mini-workout, well worth the reward.

SOL Origin Survival Kit Review

Reviews - Misc. Gear

This Woods Monkey had a blast monkeying around with the SOL (Survive Outdoors Longer) Origin, a new idea for the pocket survival kit brought to us from the good folks at Adventure Medical Kits (AMK).SOL is a brand name for some of AMK’s product line and they have an array of survival oriented products that seem to fly off the shelves at my local outdoor stores This pocket survival kit had been on my wish list for some time. Then I received the opportunity to review the Origin for Woods Monkey, and I must say it’s got me hooked. It miniaturizes five of the traditional essentials with modern materials, and gives the person looking for the one stop product an option that just might save their life.

A+ Slingshot Rough and Ready Review

Reviews - Misc. Gear

I grew up in a rural village on the New York Tug Hill Plateau. Most of my extended family lived deep in the Adirondacks and I spent many weekends and summer weeks with them in the mountains. Kids my age grew up without iPods, iPads, computer games and cellphones. As a matter of fact, we didn’t have much at all – rarely did we even have television. Where there was TV, there were never more than three channels available. One thing we did have was good, clean fun and plenty of it. We learned to make and to make do. We spent time with each other and we spent time outdoors. Learning how to hunt, fish, gather and process were just a part of the way of life.

Mountain House Wraps

Reviews - Misc. Gear

As seen in issue #4 of Self Reliance Illustrated!

I like to eat. I don’t however like to cook all that much. Especially in the outdoors where cleanup can sometimes be a hassle. Sure I know a lot of folks like to do campfire cooking, and I love to camp with those folks, but I’m not one of them. I like simple, lightweight and easy to clean up meals. If it involves more than boiling water I usually pass and look for something else to pack. Based on those criteria I’ve become a fan of dehydrated

meals that don’t require anything more than boiling some water and dumping it in a pouch, so when Mountain House contacted us here at the Monkey andasked us if we’d like to try out their new Wraps I jumped at the chance.
