Les De Asis Interview

Audio - Inteviews/Profiles

BMlogoIn a continuation of our industry profiles and audio interviews, we talked to Les De Asis of Benchmade Knives recently, and we wanted to share our conversation with you. During the course of our conversation, we talked about the history of Benchmade, some of the new products coming out this year, and we hit on a little politics and issues that concern the knife industry as a whole.

The interview is a solid hour plus change, but we think it was a good discussion all around.  So, kick back and relax a bit and we'll get started.

Ethan Becker Interview

Audio - Inteviews/Profiles

Yesterday, we were able to finish another in a line of interviews with influential people in the outdoors industry.  Our latest interview was with Ethan Becker of Becker Knife and Tool.  Ethan has influenced several sectors of the outdoors industries with some of his designs.  Besides the various knives he has designed for Becker Knife and Tool, he also designed the Becker Patrol Pack manufactured and distributed by Eagle Industries, and he designed the CMI Figure 8 descender.  If that weren't enough, Ethan also took over the mantle of responsibility of continuing to update the family's largest legacy--"The Joy Of Cooking" which has been around for decades.  It's considered to be one of the best and most comprehensive books written for teaching the art of cooking.

During the interview, Ethan talks about his history and the things that appeal to him with regard to the outdoors and knife industry.  He talks on several knife makers whose work he admires, and he talks about the sense of community and comraderie found in folks that are of a common mind.  So, we hope you enjoy the interview and gain a little knowledge from someone who has had a significant effect on several outdoors activities.

Chris Reeve Interview

Audio - Inteviews/Profiles

We just had a another great interview yesterday with a very well-known and well-respected knife maker, Chris Reeve of Chris Reeve Knives.  Probably best known right now for his high-end Sebenza folding knife, Chris operates his factory out of Boise, Idaho.  He was kind enough to sit down and talk with us for a while about his history in the knifemaking business and he shared some insights as to how he got started, what gave him ideas for news designs, and some of the things he believes separates his products from the mainstream.  Aside from his Sebenza fame, Chris has won numerous awards for his designs, and has developed a wide variety of knives suited for the military, outdoors enthusiasts, and just the every day Joe.  One thing I find most interesting and respect very much is the fact that one of his designs, the Green Beret model, is actually issued to soldiers upon completion of their special forces training.  As a true patriot, I consider that a high honor indeed.  We spent about an hour with Chris, so settle in for a little bit and share some time with us as we talk to one of the most respected knife makers currently in the industry.  We hope you enjoy the conversation as much we did.  He's an interesting fellow, and it was a lot of fun!

Arno Ilgner Interview

Audio - Inteviews/Profiles

"Our lives are made up of moments and minutes and seconds and days, and being present for those moments really is what brings value to our lives and happiness to our lives...."

Those were some of the thoughts from Arno Ilgner as we did our audio interview with him just a few days ago.  That interview was a slice of moments and minutes for me and I think they were well worth experiencing, and I think you will too once you listen to the interview.  Arno is an author, instructor, and a rock climber with more than thirty-five years of experience.  His book, "The Rock Warrior's Way: Mental Training For Climbers" covers his basic philosophy that he's developed through his experiences and it provides a foundation for how to approach challenges and deal with fear not only on a rock face, but also in every day living.  I had a great time talking to Arno and learned quite a bit from him about a sport that I have little knowledge of, and I also learned a few good tips about life as well.

Doug Ritter Interview

Audio - Inteviews/Profiles

We just had a great interview yesterday with Doug Ritter of Equipped To Survive and got a lot of great information, background, and tips from him on a variety of topics related to the outdoors and preparedness. I've been a big fan of Doug's site and the information he's had to share for almost a decade.  Doug has an extensive background in training and consulting with organizations about preparedness issues, including military units, commercial endeavors, whether it has to do with aeropace or maritime concerns.  Even though he deals with a lot of groups and organizations, he still writes articles and designs gear for the average consumer.  But, that experience he has gotten with the various groups translates into quality gear and information for all of us.

Paul Scheiter of Hedgehog Leatherworks

Audio - Inteviews/Profiles

After having recently done a review on Hedgehog Leatherworks' sheath for the Tom Brown Tracker, I wanted to do a follow-up audio interview with the owner Paul Scheiter.  This interview was to discuss his creations more in-depth and also to get the personal side of how his business started and the types of things he wants to accomplish with it.  Paul is very personable and this turned out to be a great interview.  I'd encourage you to listen to the interview since I believe Paul has some of the same thoughts and convictions that many of us share about outdoors skills and enjoying just being in the wilderness.  I am sure that we will be hearing a lot more about him and his presence in the outdoors industry in the years to come.
