Midwest Native Skills institute: The Rediscovering the Old Ways Series, Fire: Volumes 1&2

Reviews - Firestarting Equipment

If you’re reading this on Woodsmonkey.com it is fair to say that you have an interest in the outdoors. The canopy over woodsmonkey central doesn’t get much more specific than that though. If it is something you can use in the outdoors just throw it in the reviewers pit and one monkey or another will latch onto it and check it out. Speaking only for me, this monkey is easily as eager to check something out if it is old as if it is new. I have just as much interest in learning ancient knife building methods as learning fluidized bed withdraw single crystal heat treatment.

K&M Match Safe Retrospective

Reviews - Firestarting Equipment

When I came in from the woods this evening, I found a small pile of laundry waiting for me. How convenient! I'll just chuck my grubby duds in the washer with that load and be one step ahead. Always thinking, I frisked myself twice as I removed each layer, looking for knives, tinder, fire-starting devices and what-not, and stuck each article of clothing in the washing machine as it cleared the pat-down and was removed.

Gerber/ Bear Grylls Survival Series Fire Starter Review

Reviews - Firestarting Equipment

When I first opened the package to inspect the Survival Series Fire Starter I was struck by its odd design. Sure the package indicates that it is a fire starter but it didn’t look like any fire starter I have used nor does it look like the ones included in Bear Grylls survival kits that I reviewed last month. The gray plastic tube with orange survival markings and a lanyard with a whistle seem like an unlikely package for a fire starter. However, as I quickly found out during testing the design makes sense and is extremely functional. IMG_1793a

REI Uco Stormproof Match Kit

Reviews - Firestarting Equipment

REI Uco Stormproof Match ContainerI have to admit, I don’t use matches much in the woods anymore. Generally I use a firesteel, or even flint and steel just to keep in practice. There’s something traditional and simple about matches though that keeps them a part of my kit nonetheless. They’re handy for lighting camp stoves, you can sneak them into the base of a fire to get your tinder going, and sometimes they’re just more convenient to use.
