Wenger & Alinghi Team Up Again For 2010 America’s Cup
Wenger Develops New Alinghi-Inspired Knife for Defending America’s Cup Champions
Salt Lake City, UT – January 21, 2010 – Wenger, Maker of the Genuine Swiss Army Knife, has teamed-up once again with fellow Swiss and two-time America’s Cup defending champion Alinghi by creating a new knife to equip the team for the upcoming race with the introduction of the Alinghi SUI1. Wenger has once again proven its dedication to precision Swiss craftsmanship and innovation by continuing to enhance its growing line of Genuine Swiss Army Knives.
The 33rd Defense of the America’s Cup will take place from February 8th – 12th, 2010, in Valencia Spain. Alinghi will be competing with their recently-launched 120-foot waterline catamaran, which includes a 180-foot mast, and is the largest boat to ever compete in the America’s Cup. They will be racing head-to-head against rival and challenger Team BMW Oracle, who will be racing in their 90-foot trimaran that boasts a 190-foot tall mast wing.
The result of two great Swiss organizations collaborating to create the finest equipment built with precision craftsmanship and leading innovation, the Alinghi SUI1 will be offered alongside the original Alinghi Yachtsman Knife and will feature a new, integrated bit receptacle with both Philips and flat-head screwdriver bits as well as Wenger’s EvoGrip technology, a texturized rubber inlay on the handle which provides a superior grip even in wet conditions. This feature provides the Alinghi SUI1 with new levels of multi-functionality, safety and efficiency, making it the perfect choice for any job above or below deck.
The Alinghi SUI1 also includes a one-handed opening 4” blade with 50% serration and a safety lock; a shackle opener, marlin spike with needle, ruler (in./cm); needle-nose pliers with wire cutter; patented locking screwdriver, cap lifter, wire stripper; reamer and awl with sewing eye; and Philips head screwdriver. All tools on the Alinghi SUI1 are made of corrosion-resistant stainless steel and the knife comes with a nylon pouch which also houses the hexagonal bits for convenience and added protection. As the official supplier Team Alinghi, a team that uses simply the very best equipment, each team member will be carrying an Alinghi SUI1.
“Alinghi is a winning organization that embodies and demonstrates many of the same core values as Wenger,” said Dennis Piretra, VP Marketing, Wenger. “Precision and attention to detail are of the utmost importance in a sport where fractions of a second can make all the difference. Wenger is very proud to offer this knife that was developed with the insight and recommendations of the Alinghi team members based on what they need to continue to be the best sailing team in the world.”
In addition to the Alinghi SUI1 that will be available for consumer purchase, Wenger has also created a fixed blade Alinghi Rescue Knife designed exclusively for each the team member to carry on their life vest to overcome the potential nightmare scenario of getting caught in the catamaran’s nylon webbing if it capsizes This knife offers Wenger’s patented EvoGrip handle with a fixed blade at one end and a standard one-hand opening serrated and locking blade at the other. The fixed cutting blade is high carbon and chrome stainless steel coated with titanium which makes the blade very efficient, improves its life span and rust proof. A unique feature of the blade is a synthetic resin coating which protects the blade against accidental cuts to parts of the multi-million dollar vessel. The resin coating is only penetrated once the blade goes into use by a crew member.
Each Genuine Swiss Army Knife, as with all Wenger products, is designed and crafted to hold true to Wenger’s commitment of excellence. The Alinghi SUI1 has an MSRP of $175.00 and features a lifetime warranty.
