Why Water Treatment Matters

Untreated water may contain bacteria, viruses, protozoa, parasites, and other contaminants that are invisible to the naked eye. Drinking contaminated water can lead to dehydration, diarrhea, vomiting, and other illnesses that can quickly turn an enjoyable camping trip into a medical emergency.

Even water flowing from pristine mountain streams should never be assumed to be safe.

Choosing the Best Water Source

Whenever possible, collect water from:

  • Fast-flowing streams rather than stagnant ponds.
  • Springs emerging directly from the ground.
  • Clear water away from campsites, livestock, and heavily used recreation areas.

Avoid collecting water downstream from farms, roads, industrial areas, or locations where wildlife congregates.

  • Most backpacking filters do not reliably remove viruses.
  • Filter cartridges require regular cleaning or replacement.

Boiling

Boiling remains one of the most reliable methods of water purification.

Bring water to a rolling boil for at least one minute (or longer at high elevations), then allow it to cool before drinking.

Advantages:

  • Kills bacteria, viruses, and parasites.
  • No specialized equipment required beyond a stove or fire.

Limitations:

Chemical Disinfection

  • Preserves the natural taste of water.

Limitations:

  • Requires batteries or charging.
  • Water must be relatively clear.
  • Does not remove sediment.

Dealing with Cloudy Water

If the water is muddy or contains visible particles:

  • Allow sediment to settle before treatment.
  • Pour water through a clean bandana, coffee filter, or cloth.
  • Then disinfect using your preferred treatment method.

Removing sediment improves the effectiveness of filters, chemicals, and UV purifiers.

Carry More Water Than You Think You’ll Need

Summer temperatures greatly increase water requirements. Most hikers require several liters of water per day, depending on temperature, humidity, terrain, and activity level.

Drink regularly throughout the day rather than waiting until you feel thirsty. If you are sweating heavily, replace lost electrolytes with sports drinks or electrolyte tablets.

Keep Treated Water Clean

Purified water can become contaminated if stored improperly.

  • Use clean water bottles or reservoirs.
  • Keep untreated and treated water containers separate.
  • Wash bottles regularly.
  • Avoid touching bottle openings with dirty hands.

Always Have a Backup

Equipment can fail. Filters clog, batteries run out, and purification tablets can be lost. Carry at least two methods of water treatment whenever possible—for example, a portable filter paired with chemical tablets or boiling capability.
